In the Arachnid Goddess universe, the soul is the part that is eternal and goes onto other things shortly after the body dies. It might reincarnate, go to an afterlife or a higher plane, etc.

The spirit is a potential presence that remains behind. As such, a wide variety of things can be spirits here and they are generally quite earth bound. The spirit represents a consciousness and presence that lingers on for whatever reason.

Ahab has been dead for a long time? She was a physical spirit? Does that mean she was some sort of living dead entity, like a zombie?

When you speak of the difference, you mean that the life force and the etherial personal identity of a human or humanoid entity are two different things, something like in Egyptian mythology?

Grey: Essentially, yes. Ahab has been dead since Hatter found her all the way back on page 39. Zombie is not an outright incorrect term for it, but she was never rotting or mindless as we associate zombies to be. I use the term spirit a bit broadly in this case, since she's kind of a ghost (an ethereal consciousness) who's inhabiting her own body and no one is the wiser. Except Mallory, who's been safeguarding her Animus inside her.

It's been a while since I've read my copy of The Book of the Dead, but you're onto the idea there.
